The Need for Nurture

Today I fed my summer flowers.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? But more than two dozen pots and planting beds sit in various locations on my patio and the task of keeping them nurtured is not a job for the faint of heart.

If you’re not a gardener feeding a plant means I mixed water with powdered nutrients and gave each plant a drink. The combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and other inert ingredients enriches the soil and boosts plant growth.

Flowers will follow. The garden will thrive.

I trust the manufacturer to distribute the right portions of each component to meet the needs of my flowers. The result will be gorgeous blooms and vibrant colors throughout the summer.

Like my flowers we as a people need nurturing—strengthening of a spiritual kind. We become weary in well-doing, broken  beneath the weight of living in a world that isn’t always encouraging. Our souls dry up without regular visits with our heavenly father. Scripture spoken into our hearts revives us.

In Psalm 42:1(NIV) the psalmist knew our longing when he wrote: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.”

Like the fertilizer manufacturer God knows what combination of words and instruction will make us thrive. As I read his Word, the Bible, I am filled with his wisdom. As I pray He speaks to my soul through the Holy Spirit. I can trust Him to meet my every need.

In Matthew 5:6 (NIV) we are told: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

Are you in need of nurturing today? Spend time with your Lord and get the boost your spirit needs. Jesus is waiting. You only have to ask.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
